Ocular manifestation of Behçet’s syndrome – a case report
Purpose. This article discusses the case of a first manifestation of Behçet’s syndrome in the form of posterior uveitis, its epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria and treatment options.
Material and Methods. A patient presented to the emergency department with eye complaints that had been present for several months and had not been treated on an ambulatory basis. She was admitted to hospital and underwent extensive diagnostics, which led to the diagnosis of posterior uveitis within the context of Behçet’s syndrome. Acute treatment with methylprednisolone was initiated, which led to an improvement in visual acuity.
Results. A stabilisation of the visual acuity was observed in the follow-up examinations, while the FAG and visual field findings improved. The patient also reported a relief of her symptoms.
Conclusion. An ocular manifestation such as uveitis can be the first manifestation of a chronic multisystem disease such as Behçet’s syndrome. Due to the potentially severe course of the disease, it is therefore important to know the spectrum of symptoms and the diagnostic criteria in order to ensure a prompt start to treatment.
